The supply chain costs are a major cause of concern with regard to the operating profit and net revenue figures generated by the firm. According to Murray (2006c), “Market size, growth rate and overall profitability are three economic indicators that can be used to evaluate the soft drink industry. The market size of this industry has been changing. Soft drink consumption has a market share of 46.8% within the non-alcoholic drink industry.” (Murray, 2006c) These macroeconomic indicators are used more specifically as an industry indicator that suppositions the relative market size (Aggregate GDP), growth rate (GDP growth rate), and overall profitability. The more usual macroeconomic indicators that gauge the soft drink market include consumer prices (substitutable goods), Monetary Policy Evaluation, U.S. Dollar Exchange Rate Forecast, inflation rates, and currency exchange rates. A brand name soft drink may be only affordable to a small percentage of the population on a basis of everyday usage.
The small percentage that can afford to purchase the brand name soft drink will not consume enough to offset the relative market share lost due to the product’s pricing in the face of competing macroeconomic pressure. According to Regmi (2011), “As income grows, consumers in lower income countries shift their food purchases away from carbohydrate-rich staple foods toward more expensive sources of calories, such as meat and dairy products.” (Regmi, 2011) The substitutable good example above is reflective of consumer decision making when macroeconomic forces dictate consumer purchasing power and item selection. Soft drinks ostensibly face an upward sloping inelastic demand curve that ensures consumers will purchase their brand of soft drink regardless of the asking price of the soft drink.
The market for automotive and soft drinks do differ tremendously as the marketing strategy and the exposure is truly in contrast. Soft drinks have a very small cost per unit of liquid volume (can/bottle produced) and therefore is massed produced. Automobile demand is estimated globally and a production run of automobiles are manufactured and distributed throughout its target market. Macroeconomic variables will have a greater weighted effect on the automotive industry as a function of its cost base over the soft drink industry that has a much higher profit margin for the key brand names including Pepsi and Coca-Cola.
